I came across a heifer jersey for sale from a dairy about an hour and a half away. Here's all I know about her:
She's two years old, registered, bred to registered jersey bull, due in January. She's shy and timid and doesn't do well with the rest of the herd, and therefore, doesn't get enough feed. He dairy owner said that he believes she's too small for his needs, and gets pushed around a lot. He doesn't have time to fool with her in an individual basis : right now she's in with one other cow and is doing much better. He was asking $1000, but said he'd part with her for $800. Her mother and grandmother are "working" at his dairy. He says she's just not right for his dairy because she doesn't do well in a herd.
But that's how I got Scarlet.
He says she's "odd looking" but when I got the pictures on my phone, which are very small, she looked like Sweetie I can't figure out how to send the pictures to my email account to get a better view. He says he's computer illiterate.
Here's my dilemma: My family says I can buy the cow if I like her, but if Sweetie is not bred within 60 days of the second cow's purchase, I have to sell Sweetie... am I being fair to Sweetie?
Sweetie was AI'd three times, and was only in with a bull once when I knew for sure she was in heat (and that was after she was found to have a cycst on an ovary and got two lut shots seven days apart). Half the family gets the "only less than 70% success rate of AI" and the cystic ovary and treatment. But half doesn't get it and doesn't want to get it. Especially since Sweetie is giving 2 gallons of milk a day. But maybe it's me who's not being objective...so I ask: What would you all do? Am I beating a dead horse? or does Sweetie need more time? Or is 60 more days a fair deal?
