I love 'em, but it's just too heartbreaking to lose them.
It's just been a bad few days.
I went out the other day and found a young (10 mos) buck, apparently dead in the pen. Turned out he wasn't dead yet, but died shortly. I had no idea what the problem was.
Then the next day I go out and find Dasani (9 yo) down, apparently paralysed.
The only thing I can come up with is milkweed poisoning. I came across a clump of milkweed in the hay the other day and like an idiot, instead of properly disposing of it immediately, I tossed it off to the side to be picked up later -- and promptly forgot about it. We then had 30-40 mph winds, the pile of milkweed is gone, and we have a dead goat and another that is fighting for her life.
I called the vet, he says there's nothing I can do for her, other than what I'm already doing (she's in the barn under a heat lamp, getting Nutridrench and being lifted to her feet twice a day). She's eating well, but not drinking as much as I think she should -- I mean, she is drinking, but I'd like to see her drink more.
I guess it's as the vet said, she'll either live or she won't.
But anyway, I think it would be best for all concerned if Bounty, Filko, and Stacy found a home where they would be appreciated for the breeding and quality behind them. Dasani is such an old girl, and she doesn't really like the others, so if she does pull through, she'll live out her life here.
I've got Bounty listed in Auction Barn for $200, but if the right person/family were to want a good start with good animals, I'd make them a good deal on the trio.
