Ok. I got another answer to the ad I placed a while back this afternoon.
A lady called that's got a jersey/dexter cross. Here's what she said (the facts as I have them to date):
1) Mother of this cow was a production jersey. Dad was a long legged dexter.
2) The woman stands 5'6" and the cow comes midriff to her she said.
3) The cow is bred and she "believes" is due late Sept. and the bull the cow is bred to is "a milking type and is 36" tall"
4) The mother or father (I don't remember which) of the bull that she's bred to came from Paradise Farms (he raises Dexters).
5) The cow has horns, but is very sweet. She's named Sweetheart even and has a heart shaped marking on her head. She comes when calls and leads and halters.
6) The woman only milked about 3/4 a gallon sharing with the calf last lactation. She says they had a hard time weaning the calf and mom was protective over the calf and did not want to self wean the calf. She did not use a stanchion, just tied her and milked her. She believes she'd have gotten 2 gallons a day if the calf wasn't on her last time.
7) Two other calves born were a black and a dun. Different bulls sired each one however.
8) This woman's projects involve trying for a smaller milk cow.
This cow is $850.
That's all the info. I have. NONE of my other cows have horns. Right now, Buttercup believes she is the herd queen in the field and I believe it too! LOL! How would that work out between them, I wonder?
This cow is due sooner than Buttercup is. My kids don't like the goats' milk as much as I need them to, but drink it reluctantly right now. However, I don't want that to be the deciding factor as to why I would get this cow. When Buttercup delivers, I'm sure we'll have enough milk from her for our family. But I also believe this cow would give us enough for our family. But I'd only need ONE of the cows, not both, unless I let Buttercup raise calves for us. Not sure how to do that however as we only have ONE pasture and couldn't separate everyone.
Would I be wasting my time to go and look at this girl? Sometimes I feel as though these opportunities come up for a reason....
