As a gift from God I have one incredibly well bred Dexter bull. He is a virgin bull having come to us as a yearling with our cows already bred to another bull. I have had three people approach me about "renting" him to cover their herds. So far I have just ducked the inquires but I have at least one fellow who is getting serious with an e-mail waiting in my inbox as I write. He sold me one of my cows so I at least owe him an answer.
Here are the questions/considerations as I see them but please feel free to answer any question I am not knowledgeable enough to think to ask.
1) How safe is this for my bull? Besides the obvious like where is the big ol' horned Dexter bull that already lives there gonna be during the festivities and who would be responsible and to what extent if there is an accident or injury. The price I paid for my bull would never replace him.
2)What about vet care while he is there.. how can I know that we agree on what is worthy of a vet call... after hours care or even emergency fees and who pays for that?
3) What about things like cow STD's? I just had my girls tested for Brucellosis, TB, and Jones and don't want to risk exposure. How much of a risk is this and should I require testing and to what extent?
4) What do you Charge for something like pimping out your bull? He is certainly the studliest fellow in the county and maybe in our entire region for his breed... but he is unproven... so... any ideas?? Is it usually a price per cow, fee for service so to speak, or a per week/month charge.
5) Has anyone here actually done this being either the lessor or the lessee? Not that this is a requirement to answer the above questions, heck if you have even heard of this before you are way ahead of me... but if you have done it how did it work out in the real world.
6) Should there be a written contract or is a "gentlewoman's agreement' with a handshake enough? I don't want to seem like a nut case by asking someone to sign their life away to use my bull but I am a nervous new Bully Mommy and want to have all my bases covered.
Thank you O Fount of Cow wisdom... Have I said lately that I just love you folks?
Blessings,
