Hello all,
I am looking at getting another Jersey. Thankfully a lot closer than my last purchase.
I went out to look at her today and all seemed well though I did find a fist sized hard ball in the very upper part of her back udders. It seemed to be in the center between the to quarters. When I pointed it out to the owner he at first said that was the udder ligament attachment then as he felt it said that was odd and he did not recall if he ever felt up that high. He really seems like an old fashioned honest farmer and I don't think he is lying about much.
He purchased her from a dealer about 3-4 months ago to get him by while his other cow freshened. She has not gone into heat in that entire time and he thinks she is pregnant. We have no history on her at all. She is producing about 2.5 gallons per day right now though he think she could do better on better feed. But who knows how long it has been since she freshened. He has never had any Mastitis problems with her.
She did not want to have much to do with me in the field but when he rounded her up ( reluctantly because it was not milking time) and put her in the stanchion she was calm as could be and I was able to rub her down and feel all over her udder. I think that after she got to know me she would be great.
He has a friend who is experienced with sleaving(sp?) (putting your arm down the bum and feeling around in there) a cow to determine pregnancy and is going to ask him to come check her out. I agreed to buy her and gave him a very small deposit ($20 his number not mine) but I got to thinking about the lump and called the vet. He said it did sound like something to be concerned about and that it would cost $70 to go test her blood for cancer.
I am thinking about waiting to see if she is indeed pregnant before paying for the vet to check out the lump and I want to get your take on things.
Thanks
Erik

This is one where I put a note about where the lump is.
