I keep hearing from various places how the honeybees have disappeared and the world food supply is going to collapse due to lack of pollination and everyone is going to starve as a result.
Well, I found the bees. They're here in my garden. I have no idea where they came from, but they're here by the thousands (hundreds of thousands!). I don't know of anyone in the area who keeps hives (not sure what the range of bees is), so I'm assuming these must be wild. When I stand out in my garden, the drone is almost distracting. They're covering the lilac blossoms and the dandelion flowers, which is all that we have blooming at the moment.
We normally have bees here, but for some reason this year there seem to be WAY more. Maybe it's because we've had more rain and it's wetter, I don't know. Yesterday I was out by the garden gate, next to a huge clump of blooming lilac and there were so many different KINDS of bees, it blew my mind. There were the regular honeybees (they had huge pollen clumps on their back legs), there were bumblebees of several different varieties, and some other kinds of (I assume) bees that I've never seen before. All of them were buzzing around going from flower to flower.
How about the rest of you? Have you noticed a lack of bees? Maybe this "bees are dying" thing is just another scare tactic. I'd be curious to know if anyone else has seen either an increase or a decrease in the normal number of bees they have. For myself, I know I can count on EVERYTHING in my garden being pollinated this year!
