My vet just left, and I feel as if I've been run through the wringer. I assumed that the vet was going to arrive early in the afternoon, and after the exam, I'd get to go to yoga and to the horse tack store to exchange my helmet which does not fit. Winston was reasonably polite about having this stranger palpate his nether regions, but wasn't sure about this strange smelling guy in the pen.
The vet wasn't sure about the identity of the growth since this was a flattened mass and a testicle is usually round and hard. After sedating the pig, and numbing the area, he started to dissect the area apart. Well, sedated pigs aren't completely under so, I had to hold Wins down to keep things steady. If you've tried to hold down a 100 pound pig, you know it's not easy, especially when needles and scalpels are being waved around. I had to actually kneel on Winston's shoulder, and had to hold his two legs to keep him from jumping up. I felt awful, but the vet had given him a lot of medication, so there was no opportunity to give more.
To make a long, bloody, messy, wet, exhausting, noisy afternoon short, it turned out that the person who originally did the castration didn't get it all, and the resulting leftovers turned into a scar-tissue mass of testicle and other stuff. Right now, Wins is staggering around the pen, but is on his feet, and seems to forgive me for what I did to him. Although the vet ligated the cord and the blood vessels leading to the testicle, he left the scrotal sack open after thoroughly flushing the area with betadyne, which made things even messier.
Instead of going to yoga, I'm going to hit the sack early after a hot shower. I feel like I went ten rounds with Mad Mountain Dean!
Kip
He really is a very nice pig.
If anyone wants me to post pictures of the mass, I'd be happy to oblige.
