I thought i'd share what i experienced the other day.
Went out to do morning chores, noticed one of our horses, we have 2, was standing on the wrong side of the fence in the woods. He was just standing there, resting, waiting for me to come rescue him.
The fence appeared fine.....
I walked him through the woods, over downed logs & brush to a gate 'cause he is too tall to ask him to stoop down to go under and snorts at most unusual things.
There were no booboo's on him, he appeared calm & quiet.
Our other horse seemd undisturbed and waiting for breakfast, he was good and stayed put.
Well I put my snowshoes on and went to check the fence line. It appeared that during some windy spell the fence line had slipped down and he had stepped over the fence!
In the middle of the night.
Now you need to know we live in a very woodsy/ forested area. When I take the dogs up into the woods we never see other people, not in 12 years!
Well so Rocky started to meander through the woods on our property, going under limbs and twisting here and there.
Then he came to our daily trail and took a right, he should have turned left........
I followed his trail...... I was gone over an hour!
He followed deer trails, went through picker bushes, jumped a log that was as big around as a man and hip high on me ( I'm 5'4) He crossed a fairly steep ravine, you could still see the slide marks.
He went to an area of the woods i have never been...... There was no roads , no houses, nothing for miles!
He then came to a tree down that had steep terrain right after it... this is where he turned around.
He retraced his trail, followed our trail once he reached it and came back home!
You would not guess this horse to be overly athletic, he came from a Texas ranch & had some issues and moves stiff... He is a Qt horse/Tenn. walker about 15 years old.
His name is Rocky but we wondered if he should be called traveler!
How scarey to think he was up there in the dark while I slept having no idea, if he had been hurt up there.........
We will be rechecking all the fence lines!
