Honey, our SPCA special lab mix that is is 8 yrs old is very ill. Last weekend we noticed one of her nipples was imflamed and cut. Like she scratched it till it cut. So we cleaned it and put some healing ointment on it and also cut her nails. It seemed to be healing fine then we found a sore on her back toe. An abscess? Not sure, then Thursday she was shaking her head. Ear mites or infection. I cleaned them with a solution we have then put some herbal ear oil in it. Got really busy the weekend with turkey processing and well we didn't keep an eye on her. Last night she woke me up in the middle of the night wining and scratching. I stumble out of bed to let her out then after waking up a bit and let her back in got a good look at her. aaaggghhh. She had scratched her ear bloody and was swollen down her neck.
I am sick to my stomach with worry and that we let this go.
First thing this morning I call the vet we haven't seen in 4 years (no one was ill, so why bother them) They get rabies shots at the clinics.
Well, it is bad. She is on Batril for the infection and steroids and a topical ointment. Along with the collar to stop her from scratching. Her lymph nodes in multiple places are inflammed. She couldn't find one not inflammed. So after much discussion the vet and I decided the best test to do at this point was a cell sample from a lymph node to test for lymphoma. Any blood test weren't going to change the treatment right now and would just indicate massive infection.
We will have results back in 10-14 days. It doesn't look good.
Other signs have been there that we've just put off as she is just doing her fall lazy attitude. It is cold out so I don't want to do chores kind of thing.
We had a 4 yr old female lab die of pacreatic cancer 7 or 8 years ago. It was horrible, we had misdiagnosis for 4 months until the end. Honey was the dog I got after Abigail died, I just couldn't take not having another girl dog around (we had 2 older male labs then also). Abigail getting sick started us on finding better food for the dogs, cutting back on immunizations, chemicals, eating better, ect... Now this.
They had a massive infestation of fleas a few weeks ago. I tried and tried to get rid of them and couldn't. I resorted to some of the topical treatments. Great stuff, now I have a sick and possibly dying dog.
So, what can we do to help boost her immune system now or detox her? I'm getting some Kefir going for probiotics, she does like it. I'm at a loss and brain numb. Sick to my stomach that we missed all this because we were too busy with the @#$%^$## farm and customers. and now my dog is suffering
Any help please
