We've had an awful week...
Saturday night our 28 yr old Morgan gelding buddy who was doing very well was set free from a body that suddenly became in extreme pain. He was fine not four hours before. I went up to feed at 4:30 and he was down and extremely distressed. I should say that I was home alone with 1 foot of snow in the driveway. I tried walking him but I could barely keep him up and he was going to go down in the road or driveway. I had to put him in his stall and run back to the house to call for help. I called DH who was 1 hour away, then the vet, then 2 neighbors. One to plow, one to help me keep him up, until the vet got here. Our neighbors who don't really know us spent one of the coldest nights of the year with us. They put themselves in harms way for us, they were incredible.
The vet had a hard time palpating him because we couldn't keep him on his feet, 4 grown men trying. We finally got him up and when the vet checked apparently there was some kind of growth as he couldn't get in very far. The poor boy was exhausted, sweaty, heart rate at 60. I put my head to Buddy's and asked him what he wanted it came loud and clear " let me go". At 7:40 on Jan. 20th with his head in my lap and his dad by his side we set that kind soul free... He went peacefully. Our other horses one who had been with him 16 yrs and watched the whole thing whinnied shrilly a few times then was quiet. I gave them both rescue remedy and spent extra time with them. They seem to be doing well, we're very tired and miss him terribly. He is buried on a hillside over looking the homestead, he is facing west and in a galloping position. We place with him locks of hair from the other 2 horses.
We've also had a mink get into our chicken coop and kill one of our hens and while taking care of a friends animals a dog got all but 2 of her 9 hens and I found them.
We're supposed to pick up Spring Tuesday the weather doesn't look to promising for the rest of the week below 0 and such
*sigh* I'm sooo tired and spent it makes me wonder if I really want a cow. The stress getting attached to these critters.....
Oh well I guess I just wanted to let everyone know
