Ever wonder what dogs dream about? We all assume (I do, anyway) that they're dreaming about chasing critters, or facing down another dog, or just running through a field of flowers. The feet are always twitching, there's usually whining or yipping or growling involved. I've had dogs all my life, and it's always been the same, until recently.
The Lab we just lost in January never had a bad dream, to my knowledge. Sometimes his feet twitched, but I never heard that dog make a noise while he was dreaming. You know what he always did? He wagged his tail. Thump! Thump! Thump! (That's why we named him Thumper.) He was always happy in his dreams.
And our hyper little Aussie/Lab mix always yips and growls in his dreams, but I've found that if I say, very loudly, "MEOW!" while he's doing that, he instantly stops growling. Every time! It's the funniest thing I've ever seen. He doesn't wake up, his feet and nose are still going, but he immediately stops growling. From the day we brought him home from the Humane Society, he's been our cat protector. He keeps himself between any of his cats and any other strange dog (including visiting friends' dogs who are just fine with cats and he knows and likes them). If one of them even looks to be making a move toward one of his kitties, he jumps right in there, tail up, hackles up, warning the other dog to STOP. And they do. So I can't figure out why the meowing stops his growling. Maybe he thinks one of his kitties called him away from the "fight?" Or he thought a kitty was in danger and when he heard him/her meow, he knew they were alright? I don't know, but it's strange and funny at the same time. He'll be asleep under my chair in the dining room, growling and twitching and I'll look at Rich and wink, then say, "MEOW!" and then there's dead silence. We both crack up every time!
I really don't know why I'm even posting this, other than I think it's so strange, and having as many years with dogs as I have, I've never run across anything like it. Just weird...
