Hi,
I'm Babs, mom to 2 girls ages 10 and almost 15. We are unschoolers. Hubby and I have been married 15 years. As you all do the math, yes it was love at first sight. Ha ha
I'm a farmers daughter, my dad kept dairy cows (black and whites) as did all the extended family. Calving time was always an adventure as it meant sleepovers with the cousins to help with calving. Hubby, on the other hand is a city boy and has no idea what he missed having never been anywhere near a cow.
We have a small hobby farm of 30 acres in central Minnesota with chickens, a couple goats and an awesome aussie shepherd. I am in the beginning stages of redesigning our farm for production over "ornamentation". I've always had an eye toward self sufficiency however somewhere along the way I just began to collect things. Things to feed, things to be pets, things to live out their lives and then pass on, you know how that goes I'm sure.
For a couple years now I've been telling the hubby we need to get serious about buying a cow and becoming more self sufficient. This year he seems more inclined to agree with me, and has given me the green light to begin cow shopping. The freeloading hay burners have finally been whittled down enough where (I think) we can support a cow on what hay we produce (60-80 bales a year) and I'm sure what we would save on the cost of milk alone for the week is enough to buy us a bag of grain. I'm hoping to find an older bred cow. One of us should know what we're doing right? I'm also very excited about learning to make our own cheese.
That's all I can think of. It's nice to be here.
