wait a minute. You aren't our chickens. Early this morning we heard what we thought was one of our roosters crowing from inside one of the buildings. I thought it sounded louder than usual so I looked out to be sure the doors were all closed and they were. Our chickens are locked up tight every night. So this morning when we went out to milk and let all the birds out, Carole was opening the big gate and driving a rooster and hen back into the yard. I asked her how they had gotten left out last night (and how did they get out of our yard) and she told me that she had been looking at them and it dawned on her that though the rooster was the right color of one of ours, that this guy had a much bigger comb. We only keep the breeds with the smaller combs so they don't get frost bite in the winter here in Maine. So anyway, she drove this rooster and hen into our yard. Needless to say, when we released our birds, they weren't happy about this new rooster. We have 4 of our own and they are separated into two's and each pair have their own "girls" and their own part of the property. None of our boys were happy about the intruder. We ended up putting him and his cute little hen (we think she may be part bantam) into an old chicken house for the day till we figure out what to do with them. We definitely cannot have another rooster. We weeded out about 4 not long ago and had them "dispatched". Everyone now kind of gets along so we want to keep it that way. I wish there was someone in our area that would like to have a nice looking rooster and hen. We will have to work on it.
So I guess this means that not only do people drop off cats and kittens and dogs, they also drop off chickens. No one anywhere near us has chickens so they had to have been dropped off either late last night or early this morning.
