I had posted recently that someone had dropped off a rooster and a hen at our place. We had to keep them separated as our 4 roosters were not happy about the intruder. Carole put a big sign out by our egg cart (we sell our eggs from a cart in front of our house on the weekends) that read "Free Rooster and hen" in big letters and the word "free" was in bright orange paint. (Mainers love the word "free"). We got a taker. It was a car of 2 men and 2 boys. They were all in camouflage and were on their way turkey hunting. They live nearby so they were going to get them and take them back to their house and then continue on with their hunting.
Carole took them out to the old chicken coop and figuring since they 1. had chickens of their own 2. were younger than her and 2. were men - that they would be able to catch the rooster and hen easier than her. Well first of all they set the cage in the open door of the hen house and the rooster jumped right over it. Carole went to catch the rooster around the corner as he had gotten into some cut brush. She caught him but unfortunately she fell flat, face forward...but she was still holding onto the rooster. She asked one of the guys to come and take it from her so she could get up and instead of taking it from her and holding it, he held it right on the ground. Apparently they were all afraid of the rooster. They also let the hen escape and she had to be caught also. Once the birds were in the cage, one of the men took out a couple of handkerchiefs and put them on the corners of the cage so that the rooster "wouldn't be able to peck him". This was the funniest thing. Carole said she could not believe that these men who were going out into the woods were afraid of a rooster. She did tell them that the reason we were giving him away was because someone had dropped them off at our place. It's not like we were getting rid of him because he was aggressive or anything and he never showed any signs of pecking or spearing anyone. Carole couldn't help herself and told the guys that she hoped they weren't as afraid of turkeys and they said that they weren't because they didn't have to get close to them. Just too funny.
