My name is Todd. After the birth of our first two children we decided to leave the hectic city life of South Florida that we both grew up in and move out to our little sleepy town of Mena, Arkansas to be closer to some family members. We figured it would be a safer, more wholesome place to raise our children and we were right. Since moving out here we have had two more children and since purchasing our new home have added a slew of livestock.
We live on 1-1/4 acres just outside of town and currently take care of:
3 Cats - O'Malley, Riley, and Priscilla
2 Dogs - Pandy (1/2 Husky-1/2 Golden Retriever) and Myrrhy (Papillon)
1 Heifer - Buttercup (1/2 Jersey-1/2 Holstein)
1 Calf - Blossom
43 Chickens - Bantams and Heavies (Mostly Heavies)
6 Turkeys - 1 Royal Palm, 2 Whites, 3 Bronze
A Variety of Freshwater Fish in our kid's little tank.
We are doing our best to work towards being more self sufficient, to help offset the high cost of items purchased at the grocery store. It has been incredible so far and such a wonderful experience for our children. They are homeschooled and get to learn on our little farm everyday. Since my wife and I were not raised in this type of environment, we are all learning together, which has just been fantastic.
We have recently sectioned off and planted a vegetable garden, which we hope will bring a decent harvest in the coming months. We are very excited at the prospect of being able to provide a whole menu from things that we can walk outside to get.
We have not started milking our cow yet, we just got her about 3 weeks ago and are still getting her used to the new digs and us. She seems very curious and gentle, so we are not fearful that she will give a lot of grief when we do decide to start trying to milk her. However, any tips or pointers that anybody could give us would be greatly appreciated. I look forward to reading up on new advice as it shows up on the posts and posting new things that we come across as we get there.
God Bless and Good Milking!
