I am trying to get a couple of cows. I have been researching for sometime now and have decided to go with Dexters. I want to hand milk just for the family. We also want to have one for meat. I have been reading books and going through the internet and I am still at a loss. I guess you just have to jump in with both feet. We have a small 2 acre farm. I hope it will be a farm this spring. I have my chickens all planned out for April. Two piglets coming from a friend and I really want to get a couple of cows. How do you find a good deal on Dexters. I have been to lots of sites and the prices have a large difference. I want a good friendly Dexter milk cow. We bought this little farm and I have developed cow fever. The more I read the more I want one or two. I am hoping to get my children involved. They are interested but have never been around farm animals. I have this bug to teach my kids about Responsibility and Respect with animals. My Grandpa taught us to respect all living things. Animals depend on you and to mistreat them was a terrible thing in his eyes. I think a lot of kids are missing out on that these days. Anyway I hope to become a part of this board and make some new friends. I am open to advice and opinions so please feel free to comment. For anyone who is wondering I decided on Dexters because they are friendly, small, hardy, calve easy, and are good mothers. Apparently the meat is really good and they give good milk. I want polled Dexters. My son is 5 and I am not ready to have him around a horned cow. He has no respect or understanding of the damage that can be done. I also have a 9 year old daughter who is hoping to join 4-H soon. She circled Dairy cow on her project list. I took that as a good sign.
