Hi all,
I've been lurking for a while, reading as much as I have time for, which really means work's not getting done! This is much more fun!
We have been buying raw milk for several months now & increased the quantity we consume after my husband started reading "The Untold Story of Milk." The price of raw milk is exhorbitant in these parts though. So we decided to research getting a milk cow, we have 3 acres with not alot of pasture, so I joked that we needed a minature cow, just like the mini horses. Little did I know that there are mini cattle.
We don't like to leap into things without lots of research. But I decided I better find out what cows are like, so I just started showing up at a neighbor's small farm at milking time. He took me on to train as a relief milker & my husband & I milked most of winter vacation!
So much for not leaping, we are getting (cross fingers) our first cow, a Jersey, this week. We have worked out an arrangement with our neighbor & she will get to stay at his farm, which is within walking distance. We are very excited.
Our family consists of myself & my husband & 2 sons at home & one son in England. Our littlest boy, 9yrs old, loves our adventure into semi-self-sufficiency. I think the older ones (16 yrs old) think we're a little crazy. We have 30 chickens, most of which are destined for the soup pot if they don't start laying again, 1 dog lazier than the day is long, and 2 scaredy cats (1 is even afraid of the chickens!)
I have been thoroughly enjoying reading the pleasant camaraderie on this board. So much different than most boards on ANY topic. I have many questions & look forward to hearing from you all.
Thank you for making this such a wonderful resource,
Aloria
