Hello Everyone,
My dad found this site and told me I needed to join, so here I am.
He read the thread "royally ticked off" and thought of me and my first experience with my new milk cow. I had one very frustrating experience and he thought the kind advice and support that you gave to Sara would benefit me.
Actually when I look at her experience I am very blessed. I was led to a lady who was getting rid of her milk stock and got a 3yr old full-blood Holstein for $800. "Molly" does have a injured left back leg which gives her fits when she walks, but she is SO gentle and such a sweetheart, besides being an easy milker, I just love her to pieces. Her leg is getting better each day. I hope it heals soon. The lady I got her from said that she gave her 30 CCs of penicillin, I am holding her milk for two weeks and feeding it to my other animals. They said that she injured it possibly by stepping on something, they had the vet out and he couldn't find anything in her hoof. I don't know if I should give her another dose of the medicine or not. It doesn't affect her milking though, she is giving 3-4 gals in morning and about 3 in the evening. She is unbred right now because the lady I got her from said that the bull could not breed her due to the bum leg. The first time we had to hand milk because I could not get the auto-milker to work well. She kept kicking it off and it was a bit messy!! The next time we got the milker to work and she started to settle down.
I am 23 years old and have been married for 5 yrs, we have two daughters, Kayla is 3 and Madison is 5 months. We have a few pigs, a couple of horses, a great Pyrenees dog and a barn cat. we are looking forward to getting chickens next spring. I am a stay at home mom and we are all enjoying the country life.
I am excited to spend some time looking at the other posts and gain insights from your wealth of knowledge. I will post some pics of our family, both the two and four legged ones. That is good enough for now, talk to you later.
If anyone has any advice about the penicillin shots or any other ideas to help her foot heal I would appreciate it.
Katie
