Well, we haven't exactly got off the ground with a Jersey yet. My husband loves his beef cows though. We have chickens, but we have had to pen them up since they were getting into our neighbors newly mulched entry garden, and ruining it. I miss seeing my chickens! we do let them out for about an hour and a half before dark so they get their fill of bug and such though. I think they are very upset about it because we are hardly getting any eggs now!
Anyway, we have a small homestead of 3 acres and I have almost talked my husband into letting me try a milk cow. I like the whole idea of raw milk, and butter and cheese and such. We do homeschool our children. Two are done and I have 2 boys that I would love to get involved in more hands-on stuff. I am not exactly 'earthy' as I used to call my friend who milked her cow and her goat and had a veggie garden and such. I usually kill anything green just by looking at it...I keep forgetting you have to give stuff like that water. My husband thinks I am nuts, and says I won't stay with it. But, it is something I would like to try before I get too old. I figure if I really hate it, I can sell the cow.
Now I want to ask some pro's opinion out there with our idea.
We don't want to start with a full grown cow, but a calf to raise, or as I like to call it, a milk baby. I know she will have to be 2 years before breeding and then 9 months for the new baby. I realize that is a long time to wait for milk! However I would like your opinion on whether that is a good idea or not. If you think it is, how would I go about finding a healthy baby? If you think this is a nutty idea, I'll be listening. Thanks so much for any help you can give me.
