Our new farm is a blessing in dry years …but I think will be challenging in wet years!
The water table is such that last year during a drought the fencer pulled out to replace fence posts (excavator accidentally hit a few!) …they are ten foot wooden treated posts - five foot above ground - five foot below. Water gushed in and filled the holes 🥴
The upper field is a high elevation - it’s tiled - yet it’s wet …there are many underground springs in our area.
The lower pasture gives one an uneasy feeling in spots …it’s like walking on a saturated sponge ~ excavator said his huge machines rock back and forth in some areas …it’s basically peat.
So when our hay field at previous farm was dry and dying our pastures here were green and growing …but I see this year the lower pasture is dying out …too wet for the grasses I think …its been much wetter this spring. The pasture grass inside the fence is dying and looking poor and then right outside the fence in the mowing zone is this lush green native like grass that seems to love the wet ground!
Grass needs to be grazed in other areas ~ getting long ~ but I needed to pull cows off as they were ruining it …I was sinking down in areas!! And I weight 120lbs! So a 1,500 Guernsey was a disaster 😬
The peat areas the Polywire posts were floating up!!
There is this grass that looks like the grass we had at the previous farm in the lower swampy area of the pasture in the far back corner…cows loved it…I think maybe it’s the same kind of grass~ looks very similar! But I’m not good at telling varieties.
This grass grows in the creek here - in standing constant water! Thick and lush in the water. And it grows in other low areas that we want to fence in the future.
Was wondering if it was a certain type one could buy grass seeds and plant in the lower pasture or if it’s some native - weed like grass that one can’t purchase.
Some areas with this grass have been mowed twice already this year!
