My awesome Guernsey/Murray Grey was due yesterday. She was bred via AI to Jersey semen. I was SO excited for her calf, more than any other. We had bad thunderstorms today, so we had to hunt her down in the woods and bring her back to the barn. Then we watched her like a hawk all day. She seemed miserable, and her bag and teats were bigger than they’ve ever been. She’s seven and had four calves, I think.
Her water broke at 5:10. She was having contractions and pushing but the little hooves never got further than an inch or two out. So I texted my vet friend at 5:30. She said if there’s no progress by 6:00, text me and I’ll come. I texted her at six. She arrived at 6:30. She pulled the calf out and it was dead. A heifer, of course. I was so upset I left for the house and got my milker and went to milk my other newly fresh cow.
My daughters told me later that she said there was a tear in the sack or something like that, and that the umbilical cord probably got severed at the same time because it wasn’t connected to her when she came out. She also had a ton of meconium on her sides.
Two of my kids had been talking about getting a calf and grafting it on one of our cows, raising it up, and selling for meat. My daughter (21) had me and my son drive an hour and fifteen minutes to pick up the only calf my dairy friend had. They paid for it and they’ll do all the work needed. While we were gone (got home at 11:30 p.m. - blah) she skinned the calf! I was shocked she could do that. So in the morning she plans on trying to get Cinnamon to accept the new calf. Or maybe she did tonight. I’m so exhausted, I went straight to my room and clocked out for the day.
Anyway, we got this calf now. My other calf is lonely but I have PTSD over the last cow/calf I had taken for a friend to sell that brought us Staph A. How long do I need to quarantine the calf from my week-old calf? He’s a bull calf.
