We made it through another kidding season!! I really thought that out of 20 does kidding I would finally get my Traditional black headed girl that I have been wanting so badly ( thanks mollymoo ).
I got 3 traditional kids total. I brown headed, 1 golden headed ( both does) and 1 black headed!! A big buck ( of course ) so my quest continues for next season......
Things went pretty smoothly overall and everyone is doing well.
I had several sets of quads and triplets which had me bottle feeding 6 boys( i pulled) and then an experienced mom just rejected her 2 doelings after they were delivered. She had them outside in the cold wind and they were flat out but I found them shortly after birth and got them warmed and fed but she refused to mother them, so I am feeding them.
Thankfully I sold all 6 boys so just bottling 2 is easy.
Had 1 horrifying kidding experience and a first for me.
MARA a 10 year old lost both her kids last year and grieved something awful for them. She did rebound by Fall and looked really good so I thought I would see if she would breed one last time. She did get bred and we came out to feed and my daughter said " Mara is in the corner talking and laying down". I said "lets get her in a pen". Daughter got her horns and I went around behind to urge her forward and there is a gigantic head sticking out of her. It had been there for some time as it was dry, grossly swollen with a tongue hanging out.
I knew that thing had to be delivered and all I had to grab was the head. She thankfully was still trying to push so on the next contraction I grabbed the head with both hands and leaned back with all my body weight and it wouldn't budge. Kept doing that and after i think 3 times I felt it start to come. I also thought the tongue moved?? Well I was pulling so hard I figured if it was still alive it wouldn't last long but once the shoulders came it slipped out and I just grieved for poor Mara at losing another
She was talking, licking and pawing at that body and after a few minutes I thought I heard that baby answer her. When I looked he was up on his brisket and I got him under a heat lamp to warm ( it was cold that morning) I knew there was no way he would nurse on his own right now so went down , warmed some colostrum and he chugged down a 12 oz bottle!!! His head and face, muzzle were grossly swollen 3x their normal size but he could eat. I named him CB.
Here he is today with his doting momma
Here is a sampling of the other kids. I am buck heavy again this year but have plenty of girls that are " keep worthy" to choose a few from
My 2 bottle doelings " Peggy & Prim.
Fran & Emmy -- 2 keepers for sure.
Susie & Sonya -- keepers too
