I grew up as a child in a suburban setting and had the dream of most little girls, horses. As I got older, my Mom and I moved in to a more urban setting and there were no horses etc anywhere, so my dreams were put away. Life went on on, but every now and then, there was a glimmer of "what if". The closest to a farm I had ever been was my best friend in elementary school! I was completely ignorant of farm life.
I had kids of my own and served in the Navy for 7 years, saw some things I can never take back and something in me was searching for more. I left the east coast that had been home (Virginia) and decided to try Minnesota. I did mention I am weird right? Anyway, I made some friends over time, had a house, bought a few horses, had no idea what I was going to do for firewood and hay other than buy it! LOL! Self-sufficient? That means you spend money, right?
Somehow I met a man that I think took pity (LOL) on me! He is a beef farmer, owns a farm and I sold mine. He taught me how to be self-sufficient and every day I am learning more. All this started in 2006... now I grow a big garden and can all our winter produce. We raise some chickens for food and some for eggs. I help with the haying and planting from beginning to end:) I ride a different horse to check cows just for fun!And I bought our cow for milk and I am trying to learn to make cheese to add to our butter and yogurt! If you would've told me that milk didn't come in a plastic jug from the store 5 years ago, I would've laughed!!!
My inspiration? My kids and my childhood dream...
