One of my elder Aline wethers (nine years old) has turned up with a raging scabby outbreak all over his poor body. I thought it was sarcoptic mange at first, and treated with Ivermectin and a DIY surfur salve, but it kept getting worse. I took him to the vet last week and she said that no, it wasn't mange, but was a skin infection. She took scrapings and showed me bacteria under the microscope. Some kind of staph... She prescribed Nuflor antibiotic and Banamine for pain relief, and chlorhexadine scrub once or twice a week. I've been doing that and it is only getting worse. I put him in his own stall next to the other goats, where he has food for himself and a soft bed. He is in such pain that he can't lie down, and he isn't eating well and is getting weak. He is still eating but the condition has just fallen off of him. He looks totally exhausted.
I made a whipped herbal tallow balm cream with aloe, and have slathered that all over him twice today, to try to soften his skin, help with the healing and give him some pain relief. He has been a healthy goat all his life and now he is randomly falling apart, and I just don't understand it.
The vet is coming out tomorrow to look at him again. She said maybe a different antibiotic and perhaps a biopsy... but he is in such a decline that I am afraid he is going to crash while we are farting around for a solution.
Any wise words? Has anyone seen something like this?
ETA: Just found a drench recipe:
1 cooked sweet potato,
1 cup yogurt,
1 cup warm water,
1/4 cup molasses, and
1 bottle of warm beer.
I made this up and gave him a cup of it. He didn't argue. I'll continue this tomorrow.
