Hi there! I am so glad to have found this forum! Plus it's super nice to go back to the old school days of online forums as well! We are a small family of four, husband, wife, and two children (praying for a miracle #3). We have dreamed of getting land and hobby farming/homesteading (also wondering which term is most appropriate to use?) for our entire marriage. God has had MANY other things in store for us over the last 15 years but we are now finally in an adorable small home on a small plot of land (1.78 acres) with no restrictions. I have joined FB homesteading groups that have turned out to be very discouraging with people telling me that our 1.78 acres is not enough to have a family cow even with us wanting a mini Jersey. Our house is very small (under 1100 sqft), so it does not take up a lot of the land. My husband does not want goats nor goat's milk. We only plan to have a nice sized garden, some fruit trees (there was already a couple of producing cherry plum trees and a pear tree when we got here!), a handful of chickens, and a mini Jersey and her calf. Are our hopes of adding a family cow too high? We are thinking of raising something for meat and leaning towards quail due to space. So all in all I feel it is doable, but then again we are complete beginners and learning as we go. I will be purchasing the Keeping a Family Cow book, and I also understand that we will need to supplement her diet since we do not have that much land, but of course I know there is a lot more to learn before we make a purchase. I guess my ending thoughts are... with the way the world is today and with the knowledge that less than 100 years ago our relatives were making what they had work because they had to, that there's no reason we can't do the same. So here I go... clicking send with one eye closed and the other one squinted hoping that I get responses telling me that there's no reason not to have a family cow. Either way, thank you and I look forward to learning from the pros.
ETA: A neighbor who is an 83 yo rancher told us we had great grass... LOL! If that helps!
