I have this baby heifer I'm raising. She's one tough cookie! She came down with scours so were dealing with that. Then she seemed to get over it and was fine. Not too long later she had scours again and then she had clostridium (or so it appeared) on top of that! As soon as I realized it, I treated her right away with a large dose of penicillin, relieved a bunch of the gas in her abomasum and prayed super hard!! Thankfully, God saw fit to let her live, and the next morning she was back to normal (but still scouring). I gave her a smaller dose of penicillin each of the following two days and the scours was clearing up again. A few days later she lost her appetite and bloated all up again! I gave her another big dose of penicillin and if I remember right, some fluids with charcoal, etc. The next morning (yesterday) she was not bloated anymore. She was hungry and I gave her electrolytes. But last night she got a milk bottle and this morning she accidentally got another milk bottle... I was going to give her electrolytes again so she wouldn't bloat, but I was working and someone else fed her before I remembered to give feeding instructions. Then tonight she got electrolytes and turned into a balloon again. But it looks like her scours are gone. The cycle continues and I feel so bad for her! I hate giving antibiotics, and I'm wondering how to get her back on milk without bloating her again. She was on iffy milk replacer, but now I have her on the best stuff I've used so far and have never had any clostridial issues with. She's such a pretty princess and I don't want to lose her. I'm getting concerned about what effect all the antibiotics are going to have on her...
How do I get her well?
