I'm raising my own project chickens, but the power went out the day before my last group was due to hatch. Miraculously one chick hatched. Ugh. So I bought 6 feed store chicks to keep him company. The girl caught the 6 slowest chicks from 3 pens, 2 California Tan, 2 Cinnamon Queens, and 2 Red comets. i knew at the time I wasn't getting the liveliest chicks but was more worried about getting big chicks that would beat up my Isabel Ameraucana that just hatched. Now the problem.
The 6 chicks did not pick up like I thought they would. Their wings are feathered out but some stick out too far on the sides. They feel lighter than they should. A couple had pasty butt which I cleaned off with warm water. (they were completely blocked and took some effort to clean) The one with the worst caked on mess has improved the other slowed down a little. Right now I'm reviving weak chicks that just lay down by dipping their bills in warm sweetened water. Today one chick that was fairly lively earlier was laying flat being trampled and I thought it was dead, but revived with sweetened water.
I have a heat lamp on them. Fresh water, crumbles, mealworms, chopped greens available. I've raised plenty of chicks so I'm sure the environment is correct. What are the symptoms of Marek? Or what am I dealing with? My newborn chick is stronger and more vigorous than the other 6. I'm pretty sure he is now infected too if its a disease. Naturally the feed store is out of medicated crumbles, anything else I can do to help them?
