Hi Everyone,
I have been reading this forum since we got our first house cow in april this year.
What a fantastic forum this is! I have already learned so much(and so much more to learn )
Since this is such a great resource, I decided to join in. First time in my life to be on a forum!
I am originally from germany and have been living in Australia for 14 years, 12 years in Tasmania.
I am a barefoot trimmer for equines and mother of 4.
We always had horses and chickens.
Last year added pigs and in april our beautiful jersey Wattle and her steer calf T-Bone have joined us.
Wattle was in calf when we bought her and gave us a beautiful heifer Daisy on 18th sept. How lucky are we?
Wattle was a little standoff-ish when she arrived, she has horns and i was a little intimidated.
This is how i found this forum, and all your fabulous advice!
I established being boss cow by stomping my feet at her and telling her off when she would shake her head at me.
It worked and she is a great cow for us now! Not lovey dovey, but she knows her job and does it well.
Daisy is great. we have handled her daily since birth(which wattle has always been ok with), we milk share. She leads well and I can pick up all 4 feet. I make sure she's friendly but respectful at all times.(much like with my horses)
First thing I did when Wattle arrived was a hoof trim couldnt help myself.
I would love to learn how to Ai! I don't want a bull!(had an accident with a rouge ram years ago and am still mortified! Broken wrist, torn ligament in the knee and herniated disk,He only had a blood nose ) We have a few dairys in the area but I havent had much luck getting any info. No courses in Tasmania that I can find..
Sorry for the ramble lol
I am infected with the cow bug and excited to meet likeminded people.
Have a great day everyone.
And enjoy your cows
