Oh, yes, those dangerous, face-eating box turtles! LOL!
I have heard, and my experience with three so far has proved out, that most, if not all, Pyrenees are afraid of gunshots, thunder, and any loud, sudden noise. I think it's because the breed developed in the Pyrenees mountains, and the sound just before an avalanche sounds like thunder, you know, when the snow breaks loose and starts to slide. It would be a very good self-protective trait for any dog in those conditions to run very far when they heard a boom. Rich and I have not been able to target shoot ever since we've had the dogs, because of that. It terrified them, ALL of them. But not Maggie.
Other than her shorter coat, Maggie LOOKS like a Pyr, and I guess I just assume she's going to behave the same, but her breed developed in Turkey, and it can be cold there, but I don't think there's as MUCH snow and avalanche possibility. I'm purely speculating here, but maybe she won't be afraid of gunshots or thunder just because she doesn't have that fear of avalanches hard-wired into her. And I'm guessing about the avalanche fear as well. Nobody told me that, but it makes sense and explains the "unexplained" fear of loud noises that Pyrs have.
I wish there was more information available on the Akbash breed. I'm learning SO much about her just by observing her, but since they're a "rare" breed, and not recognized by AKC, there just isn't a whole lot of information other than the general "good with family" and "wary of strangers" type of thing. I did find one site that said they unfortunately have some of the same health problems that Dobies have, namely DCM (heart failure), hypothyroidism, and hip dysplasia. Not all Dobes get those, and I hope Maggie doesn't either. I had one Dobe, my Shogie-boy, that just dropped dead out in the yard when he went out to potty. His heart just stopped, right in mid-stride. It's a horrible thing, and I was shocked to find that Akbashes are also prone to that. I just won't think about it.
For now, Maggie is a beautiful girl, and getting more beautiful every day. She's getting longer in the leg, and she's big enough now to thump her on the ribs. I love a thumping dog! LOL! If I tried to thump Jasper, he'd figure I was trying to beat him, so I've never tried, but Maggie just wags and wiggles when I thump her. She loves it!
