I've had a skunk hanging out in my garage for the last week or so and have been at a loss as to how to get rid of it. I've tried trapping, but all I catch is cats. I only see it in the morning when I'm leaving for work at 5:30, and by the time I run back in the house for the gun its gone, and I guess I really don't want to shoot it in the garage anyway.
So the other night I let Tess out the last time before bed, and she takes off around the side of the house full speed and barking her get out of here bark. I thought she must have been chasing off the bear that has been coming around, I called her but she didn't come right away so I thought I'd give her a few more minutes before I call her again. I went back out to call her and she was in front of the house rolling in the snow and sneezing so I called her in. I did not smell anything outside, but when she went past me through the door I caught the smell, and she looked so ashamed of herself and went right in her crate.
It was too late to bathe her, and too cold to make her sleep outside, so I had some malodor neutralizer that I had gotten from work (vet clinic), I laid her down and sprayed and brushed that through her hair and then sprayed the house with air freshener and called it good for the night and planned on taking her to work for a bath the next day. I couldn't believe it when I got up in the morning there was no odor, I had to bury my face in her hair to smell anything. I don't think she got a direct hit, it was more on the side of her neck and shoulder. Good news is the skunk seems to be gone. I don't know if she grabbed it and injured it enough it went off and died or if it just went away.
If your house dogs ever get skunked, this stuff works great and saves the hassle of trying to bathe a dog in the middle of the night. Its React malodor neutralizer from Ultra Chem Inc. Might be something to have on hand just in case.
