I have a 7 day old Jersey/Holstein bull calf I got from a dairy at 4 days old. He looked fine on at the dairy, but seemed lethargic when we got him home, a ten minute drive in a closed thriller. He had up to be lifted up just to walk to the barn, but spronked about a bit when he was let go. He got a bit of milk for lunch, had to figure out how on a cow, and then nursed at evening milking. He got about a quart and a half in the evening. The next morning he had to be helped to stand again and he did nurse but very slowly. I took his temp and it was 105 so I went to the feed store and got LA200, which was the only antibiotic I could find in town. He got 4 cc subQ. The next morning he was up and nursed but by afternoon he was just limp. So for dinner he got two quarts of electrolytes tubed into him and another 4ccs of LA200. This morning he was up, talking to the other calves through the fence and looking actively for a teat. He drank his quarter for breakfast with some spunk although he didn't finish it. The cow gives 3 gallons a milking so I think he took a quart and a half. I had inflations on the other teats so I know he didn't get more. I had to hook the machine back up to finish his quarter. He isn't over eating for sure. I was just out checking on him and saw him poop blood. It looked fresh, not old rust colored or brown blood, fresh and red.
So what do I do now? Is the blood from his general whatever he has or could he have Coccidiosis? He doesn't seem to have major scours, seems like normal baby poo, and no coughing heavy breathing.
I am planning on giving him another 2 quarts of electrolytes for lunch. Should he get more antibiotics also? He is much more alert and bright eyed but the blood is a major concern now. I need over the counter treatments as I don't have a relationship with a vet yet for the big animals.
Thanks for any advice.
