We currently have a Doberman, which we love (inside/outside dog). And if you've every had a Dobie, you know that they spoil you for smart dogs. I cannot tolerate stupid dogs anymore.
Outside we have a 1/2 Pyranees, 1/4 Australian Shepherd, 1/4 something I can't remember. She (Gypsy) looks and acts like a Pyranees with a smaller body. She has been great, but is having some struggles lately.
Gypsy is deathly afraid of gunfire. Since we had some people move in that have a sort of weekend shooting range on their property, she's been more of a basket case. If she's upset, she will not walk with me when I move fence. Then it takes her several days to recover from a round of shooting to get confident enough to go again.
I hate moving fence without my dogs. Our Dobie is getting old and sometimes won't go because he doesn't feel good. I don't expect him to make it to next summer, but again, I said that a year ago.
Gypsy also hasn't been upholding her guard duties either. Last week a couple stray dogs came and got to chasing the pullets that don't go in the chicken pen at night and she was just standing around watching. Very weird. The Dobie came out and ran them off.
So we're thinking after our Dobie goes we will get another outside dog, as I've convinced DH that I don't want to feel this exposed to predators, etc.
But I'm wondering about a full Pyranees? Would they walk with me when I do my rounds in the pasture?
I saw an ad for a Pyranees/Standard Poodle cross. I love poodles, had one as a kid. That could be a fabulous combo of working dog and people pleasing. Certainly interesting.
I've looked at Akbash, Anatolian Shepherds. There are some Komondor/Pyrannees for sale now.
And I do understand the difference between people pleasing smart dogs and LGD working dogs. I think we just got very lucky with Gypsy as she bonded with me completely. And up until the regular shooting started, she was always with me, watching, when I would move fence, which I loved.
Tell me what you think and anything you know about these different breeds.
