We have a beef cow we are watching like a hawk.
She is one of the inlaws old girls. She had metabolic issues last year and we were reluctant to rebreed but as nature will it happened.
However she somehow sustained a serious injury to her hip which mean she had very impaired mobility. We dont know if it was a breeding injury or she got into a fight . We could not sell her because she could not walk onto the truck.
We have carried her all winter while she struggled to get condition on in a drought.
Anyway she has made it so far.
Her udder is full and teats sprung, yesterday evening she was off by herself, not cudding, tail swishing licking her tummy. We thought good oh, calf on the ground in the morning.
No calf on the ground in the morning and cow looked a little off balance, and a little freaked. We got her into the yard and we decided to give her 4 in 1 before we did anything else.
After the 4in1 was in, gloved up and checked her condition. I was fully expecting to feel the calf and I did but it wasn’t in the vagina it was under it and the cervix was a good 4in further in and she was only 3 fingers dilated.
This was so weird, never felt this before. What to do?
Well I careful pushed the calf back into the pelvic cavity and rang the vet. Over the phone advice was give another bag of 4in1 and wait an hour. If no progress, the vet would pop in after a visit to a local farm.
No progress and so the vet called in, cow still only 3 fingers dilated but the calf now way back in the abdomen. Vet gave an anti inflammatory and the advice to watch and see. If she is still off this evening we are to give another 4in1.
Weird all round.
Anyone have any ideas what happened, why it happened and what we should do now?
