Homeopathy can be used to address calving, mastitis, milk fever, calf
rearing and pre-mating issues. The following products would be worthwhile to have on hand for your
animals;
Arnica/Bellis – for every cow calved, supports internal reproductive bruising. Can be used in the water
trough to the colostrum mobs.
SSC – No.1 homeopathic choice for clinical and sub-clinical effects of mastitis
MA nosode – used for whole herd this product helps to maintain a healthy cell count
PBS – a combination of Phytolacca, Bryonia and Strep uberis, used mostly around calving time
Cal/Mag – weekly until the end of calving, supports metabolic imbalance
SC nosode – supports the gastrointestinal system of young calves
Tub aviare – immune booster for calves in their first week of life
Pyrogen – helps reproductive system expel any retained cleanings
MA Udder Spray – a soothing topical application that is sprayed on to the affected quarter and rubbed
into the udder of the cow, especially for hot, swollen and painful quarters.
For Calf rearing, remember products like China off for changing from colostrum to whole milk.
SC nosode can also be utilised at this time and when calves are first born to assist the gastrointestinal
system. We also have other products to help with calf scours like, Coccidiosis, Rotavirus,
Cryptospirosis and E-coli, particularly if these bacteria have been identified. Please don’t hesitate to
ring us to discuss this further.
Silica is beneficial for any calves that might be lagging behind a bit, fragile, weak and showing ill thrift
and not thriving like the rest of the mob.
Some homeopathic products to support scours;
Calc phos – thin, green spluttering scours
Colocynthis – spluttery, forcibly expelled scours. Maybe signs of abdominal pain.
Thuja – yellow scours with flatulence and distention
Veratrum album – green, thin, watery scours
Tub aviare is given to all calves in their first week of life or when new calves come onto the farm to
support general immunity.
Administration: 1 spray twice daily for 2 days only.
For cows suffering from paralysis or slight paralysis due to bigger calves or longer calving’s, Hypericum
is known as ‘Arnica of the Nerves’. This product is very helpful for these issues. When cows have had
longer calving’s and they look weak and exhausted, Phos acid is brilliant to assist the recovery from
calving. We need these cows to be able to perform from that calving on, going forward for the whole
year of production and getting them back in calf or lamb, so giving them some support following the
birth is so important for her start to the year of production ahead.
Continue putting Cal/Mag in the trough for the whole herd to help replenish these essential minerals
that become depleted during the pregnancy and lactating period. Helps to balance the metabolic
status of the animals.
Herbal Digestive Drench can be used for calves at weaning to help support a healthy intestinal flora
when transitioning from milk out onto pasture. This is given at the full moon as a one dose application.
Ignatia for any stressful situation where there is separation anxiety of calves and cows. Useful for
calving, weaning, dehorning, transporting, in head bail, working on feet, breaking heifers in. Also very
helpful for the staff to remain calm and relaxed.
Any cows that are looking suspect, as in not doing so well or off colour, either in the milking mob or
colostrum’s, remember the Herbal AB for animals. It’s a fantastic tonic to support all systems of the
body and generally help in recovery from illness. Easy to administer and you don’t need a lot of it.
This might be a good time to be thinking of Alfalfa as a nutritive and tonic for weight gain, increased
milk production and over all vigour and stamina of the animal. Transitional cows can lose weight
initially and then take time to recover, so Alfalfa is useful from now until Christmas time at least.
Remember the homeopathic Minerals which can help with the assimilation and uptake of any other
nutrients the animal is taking in. In conjunction with Alfalfa these two products provide support to
assist with the overall conditioning of your animals.
