Yesterday, my cows were lounging in the sacrifice area up by the main road waiting for their supper when a ton pickup truck and a long aluminum stock trailer started up the hill just before our place, lost their drive shaft with a clatter and then coasted to a stop at the edge of the road, right beside where the cows were milling around. As a herd, every cow instantly swung around as one and came running through the gate to get as close up to the house - and mom - as they could. All the cows were snorting and blowing, eyes wide open in that terrified stare that Jersey's do, udders swinging back and forth, while the calves were bucking and kicking, with no idea what was happening.
They milled around upset for a good five minutes as the boss cow and her wannabe side kick inched up to sniff at the fence nearest to where the trailer was stalled. About that time, the driver who had been under his truck looking at the damage suddenly revved his motor and the cows wheeled and stampeded all the way to the back pasture where they cowered and milled about for an hour till time to milk. I hadn't seen the 14 year old cow move that fast since the day several years ago when a tornado went low over the pasture and she came galloping into the lot and slid around the corner like a race car to get under the shelter.
These are cows who normally enjoy standing or laying along that fence to watch traffic or trade comments with the neighboring herd across the road and they have zero fear of our trucks or tractor or those of the hay guy, neighbors, or anyone else.
DH thinks the cows have all been here long enough to know that when a stock trailer like that one comes, it devours their precious babies, never to be seen again.
This morning, after milking, the boss cow and her sidekick were skulking along the fence still sniffing and snorting, even though the truck had been moved 12+ hours before. Kind of worried about the quality of leadership my herd has, lol.
So what crazy things are your cows doing this year?
