She’s our Randall heifer ~ 4 1/2 months old. Never been sick before. Last night she drank from France, our Guernsey, and was alert, hungry...just her regular self.
This morning I went to the barn and she was not doing her usual mooing for milk. Quiet. I got France ready and opened Honeygold’s stall and was rather shocked to she her dirty diarrhea filled rump.
She didn’t trot to France’s stall as she always does but walked. She stood close to the udder and half heartedly thought of drinking but just walked away. She ALWAYS wants milk! She just wanted to lean her head on France’s side. She obviously feels yucky. France feeds her but that’s the extent of their relationship ~ she started kicking at Honeygold to stop her from leaning on her.
I didn’t milk France yet. Waiting to she if Honeygold might want to drink a little later. If she doesn’t drink by late morning I’ll milk out France. She’s never taken a bottle/bucket so feeding her milk that way isn’t likely.
Her ears are still perky. She has no cough, no runny nose/eyes. I will try to get a temp. She’s not too agreeable to being restrained and worked with on a good day and does not like her hind end being touched ~ I’ve been working with her so she allows me to touch her rump and sides ~ we’ve made little progress in the last couple of months. May need to wait until the husband is home from church (I stayed home as Honeygold is sick) so he can help. Am hoping she might drink from France later and then I might be able to get a temp quickly if she’s focused on drinking.
We have very cold weather coming. Feels like -15 now. Will be dropping to feeling like -50s, with snow and wind. She is in the barn but there’s no heat ~ it will be well below zero. I have no warm place to bring her ~ no heated out buildings. I don’t want to set up heat lamps, as fire risk is not worth it. So the poor girl is going to be cold. We have several days of temps not getting above -teens for the actual high. And close to -30 at night for an actual low.
On a good: She eats a little hay. No grain. She drinks milk from France twice a day. She never drinks water or has drunk water. She’s maybe had 1/4 cup if that, her whole life. Our other Randalls have been the same way. Refuse all water until they are older and close to weaning age. She always has water in her stall but will not drink it. I’m afraid she’ll get dehydrated fast and in this terribly cold weather... 🙁
Are there any supplies/medications I should be getting from the farm
store before we might get snowed in? I have no antibiotics on hand and most likely will not be able to get to the vet if the weather is as bad as they say it might be. Snow is to start this afternoon.
