So Monday morning I had my son take two of our cows to butcher. We made an appointment at 8:00 a.m., and I told my son if he got there by 8:00 I'd give him a bonus (it's an hour away, and I pay him per hour). He did.
I called them today to get hanging weights, and the lady said, "Oh, ma'am, we don't have hanging weights yet. We're going to butcher tomorrow. My son had a baby."
I get that - it's a family-run business that's been there I think 100 years, if I'm not mistaken. But I WISH THEY WOULD HAVE CALLED ME and told me. My cows are 100 percent grassfed, and for two days now they've been feeding them some kind of calf starter!!! Won't they get acidosis, if they've never had grain?!?!?! I told them they've never had grain, and she said they didn't feed them grain - just calf starter. (eyes rolling)
She said they've had other grassfed people and they've never had that problem before. Every other time I've brought cows in they've butchered them right away, at 8:00 when they open. They shouldn't feed other people's cows without asking if it's okay.
The only other problem I've had with them is when my friend wanted the hooves. She called them, discussed it, emailed pictures of what the final hoof product looks like. She picked up the cow, went to a gas station to gas up (drove 6 hours to get there), decided to check the bags, and the butcher PUT ALL FOUR WHOLE LEGS IN THE BAGS. Well from the knee down.
So my son is going back to pick them up today, and hopefully they'll live. We will have to find another butcher, even though we'll most likely have to drive twice as far. Hopefully they'll live until we can get another appointment in.
