Of course I can say this now but I should've bred my cows the other month when they were in heat and instead I wanted to wait for the "right calving time" and now... No heat. Ugh. I know better too- this always happens on the farm. They're "too early" to breed back so ya think I'll wait another cycle and then pretty soon it's like 120 DIM and they're not bred yet.
Willow- my Angus x came in heat very shortly after calving which I didn't expect and then again a month ago. But she would've been due March 15th and that's just too early for me. It could be gorgeous it could be 5' snow and 20° out. I'd prefer to calve on green pasture, not mud or frozen ground. 😬
So now it's been at least 4-5 weeks and nothing. Thought she was in heat when Poppy my heifer was in heat but the breeder checked her and said nothing going on. Dang.
I did breed Maple my other cow about 23 days ago now and so far so good but the timing was off for her and she got bred really late so I'm not really expecting her to stay. I thought she was in early heat so I didn't call the breeder for morning but instead afternoon service. And then my 7 yr old son tells us as we're breeding her that.... Maple and Poppy were "fighting" last night while u were at work. I said... Oh really ?! How?? Kid: they were jumping on each other the whole time. 🤦🤦 Definitely should've had morning service but oh well... I'm not holding out hope for that breeding to stick plus it was 98° that day... 🙄🙄
I'm crossing my fingers she comes into heat soon, I really don't want to calve in summer. Just too damn hot and I don't want to wait on her for fall calving because shes going to get too fat I think between calves. I think I'll give it another 2 weeks and then maybe Sync her or Lut her and see what that does.
