I said I'd update with my frost seeding adventures so here it is.
Last pic is of my pasture I seeded last spring. The brown in the middle is where it's really low and it was under water for about 2-3 months last spring/summer so I think that's just shot. 😢 But the rest of that was just bare ground and corn stubble one year ago. It got overgrazed last summer too, won't make that mistake again. But it still looks good for my $100 investment in seed and only one year. Still bare spots that I'm hoping some native grasses will take over this year.
The first 3 pics are of my pasture/frost seeding project this year. Our renter left this stalky, weedy mess for us. He didn't plant it last year so it grew up in all this sh*t and then left it. I couldn't find anyone to go thru it with their stalk chopper so I figured what the hell, I'll just send it down. I concentrated on the bare spots and the ones with the least amount of thrash on the bottom. There's probably 3 acres out of 8 I didn't seed. But the parts I did surprisingly took very well! Much better than I anticipated and the conditions this spring weren't desirable at all. It's about 1.5 months since I seeded it down. ALL of the clover I put down came up. I swear every single seed. Which is great, but now I have literally 80% clover, 20% grass/weeds. Definitely concerned about bloat. I'm hoping some more of the grasses come thru before we get them out there. It's not perfect by any means. But it's better than 8 acres of weedy crap my cows can't eat. I spent around $230 for 1 bag of Annual Ryegrass, Berseem clover, Alice grazing white clover and Surefire red clover + a grazing mix of grasses for this acreage. I went cheap with the annual Ryegrass so if it didn't work, I wouldn't be out all that money.
$230 won't even cover one months hay for the girls and this pasture will definitely last more than one month so all in all a good investment.
I'm hoping this summer/fall I can get someone here to chop the weeds down even tho it'll be seeded it will be fine. Hoping to resend it this fall or next spring again.
