Hello! I’ve been trying to figure out what to do. I have tried almost everything! I’m at my wits end. The milk taste really nasty after three days. It’s a tangy flavor in the back of your throat and the cream (not really the milk) smells ripe. If the cream is removed the milk lasts longer.
So Sandy is
6-7 year old Jersey from a dairy
5 months bred
3 gallons a day (1.5 gal. per milking)
Eating twice a day:
Grass/alfalfa mix hay
1/2 gallon 14% pellets
1/2 gallon cracked corn
1/2 gallon 20% protein range cubes
3 pills of 400 iu vitamin E
Pull the milker apart once a week and deep clean it, which includes:
Wash with soap
Soak in vinegar for at least 2 hours
Bleach for at least 5 minutes
Hang dry
Everyday washing:
Rinse
Soap
Bleach (1 tablespoon)
Milking routine:
Wash milker in bleach 15 minutes before I milk then hang dry.
I wash her udder with a warm damp rag and pre and post dip with iodine teat dip. With the pre dip I let it sit on her for 30 seconds. I pre strip 3 squirts of milk from each quarter.
Milking her out takes about 8-10 minutes. Sometimes her right front and back quarters don’t totally empty in the evenings (I can NOT figure out why). Almost every night the back right quarter holds up some milk.
After milking the milk sits for about 10-15 minutes before I take it into the house.
After I strain it into clean (soap and bleach) jars I put the milk in the freezer while I wash the milker (about 10 minutes) then switch it to the fridge.
I was doing almost the same routine when she freshened in July of 2017 and the milk tasted and kept fine until around October when she got bred.
I have changed hay, grain, bedding, washing routines (for her and milker), milk cooling techniques, and even changed water sources.
I got her milk tested and theses are the results... (I think I contaminated the samples somehow)
Any ideas???
Thanks guys!
