Originally Rosie, (the cow in my avatar) looked like she didn't get bred. She was just weaning her calf and little down in condition when we had a bull. Recently she started looking like she was bagging up and plump in all the right spots, but I thought she got bred by a bull calf we had a little longer than the bull and was due much later. The last date for normal gestation with the bull the other cows were bred to would be December 25th. With Rosies' last calf her bag got ginormous, so I was watching her bag and nothing that would indicate she was due anytime soon. Well today at feed time she was standing stock still nursing 3 calves. I looked around to see if she had a calf of her own stashed somewhere and didn't see one and decided to put Rosie by herself. I watch my cows closely but did leave town for a few days for the holidays, so she could of calved. I don't think she calved while I was gone for 4 days but can't be sure. I couldn't get her in the barn because she found fresh flash frozen clover in the pasture around and wouldn't budge and it got dark while I was fooling around trying to water the other cows. She has two acres of frozen green stuff to gorge on tonight. Did I just kill my cow? Why is she calmly nursing 3 calves, (they have their own moms and are plump healthy calves)? Rosie has the personality of a Jack Russell Terrier. She picks fights and is generally aggressive with other cows despite her size and never tolerated other calves last year. My gut feeling is Rosie is still pregnant, but the calves were definitely getting something, hopefully not all her colostrum.
