Well it's that time of year again. When I get itchy to buy something big and cool. And my girlfriend made the mistake of looking on craigslist.
As it turns out there are a bunch of guernsey's/guernsey crosses available right now.
I already have 2 adult jersey's, 1 year old jersey heifer, and another jersey heifer calf (out of the NZ bull Lynbrook Terrific! Lucked out!). So I have WAY more cows than I need.
That being said, I've never had any other breeds, and although I love the jerseys for their small size, moderate milk, easy calving, yada yada. I'm still itching to try other breeds with other personalities. The jerseys can be a bit fussy. I'm just kinda curious about what another breed would be like.
And to be honest. I always say I don't care much about milk. But the only girl I have milking right now, I'm calf sharing (with momma 24/7), yet only gives me a gallon or less per day. When she was giving me 2.5 gallons on average last year once I sent her bull calf to the butcher.
Now the low milk quantity while calf sharing issue is another can of worms I realize. But I mention it because sometimes I'd like a cow that could actually produce.
I'm not so hard core grass-only, no feed as I used to be either.
So I was considering a guernsey. Wouldn't mind an old school short horn, or brown swiss or something. But for whatever reason I had my mind set on trying a guernsey next. But I know they're both channel island cows.
Anybody with thoughts on whether it would be worth the effort to try one?
*MODS: I totally meant to put this in the main forum. Can someone move it?
