Well... it's always something, isn't it? Toey calved last Tuesday, 4th lactation, lovely heifer calf, giving me about 4+ gallons a day. She's a beefy fat Jersey, never had any trouble with anything, ever. Until now. Gave her BoviKalc at calving and 12 hours later. She drank about 15 gallons strong molasses water at calving. And that's it... totally off grain. Lips at hay--both grass and 2nd cutting gorgeous alfalfa. No rumen fill.
Breath--strong acetone smell. I was able to test her ketones 3 days ago--moderate. She WILL NOT pee for me again. Believe me, I've tried...and checked my methods...and tried some more...and she just will not pee.
Demeanor: Eyes bright/alert. Ears: Up, swiveling, normal. Were cool/cold on friday, warm since. Nose: wet with droplets. Comes when called. A little subdued, but overall both vet and myself think she looks good. DH's comment: She's fine. (Um, nope, she's not, honey...but I can't do anything about your opinion...)
Not dehydrated.
She is drinking fine.
Since Friday been giving B12 and B Complex injections OAD per vet.
Been giving her Keto-Nia Fresh gel nightly. Began 250-300 cc PG Friday AM.... Then Rena's drench AM/PM, plus gobs of Fastrack Probiotic gel. Didn't give the PG this AM b/c I'm getting worried about how nasty it is.
I've bought about $250 worth of grain--ALL DIFFERENT--and, typical ketotic cow, what is barely edible one day is ignored at the next feeding. At least I've got an incredible feed store that has lots of choice.
Vet came for IV dextrose Sat and Sun... Didn't seem to make much of a difference.
Bought a molasses all-stock protein tub (20%) that she samples for a few seconds.
There is no green grass here...just had snow last night.
Any advice/suggestions/words of hope/wisdom/encouragement?
