This calf was born in July from a cow we bought that was bred. The bull was apparently an experimental bull and it was an accidental breeding. but we don't have any info and the original owner has moved. The calf is extremely fuzzy and has a short face and notched ears--the ear tips are missing--sort of scalloped. But she was born that way in July. it isn't frost bite. We were about -12 when we got up this morning. Lots of wind all night so the wind chill had to be really low. We brought a hereford calf in for the night that couldn't maintain its body heat (wet to the skin in the driving snow and all humped up and out of it--she's fine this morning and back out with her mother) We have run in shelters, but this Imp calf (solid black) stayed out. She has an angus x hereford mother. All we know of the bull is he was black, big, and experimental from a commercial farm doing experimental beef crosses. I'm impressed (no pun intended) and think we will keep her. She's never been handled like most of our calves, but isn't difficult. We can put our hands on her in the herd (we have a tame fully halter broke herd of 5 beefers plus calves/yearlings). Anyway, she was born small and black, so we called her Imp, but she has grown like crazy and the hair on her stood up to the sub zero weather and driving winds last night. Anyone want to make a guess as to what breeds are in her? The only real clues are the long thick hair and the notched ears. oh, and she would not stay with her mother--drove the poor cow crazy because that calf was so independent her mother lost her all the time. We got tired of hearing the cow calling for that calf all the time.
