and off feed.
Calving was uneventful. Big health bull calf about 70 lbs. Lily ate her normal breakfast grain this am, calved about 1:30 and has seemed fine all day. Calf has been up and nursed, she cleaned and ate the placenta about 6 pm, very attentive to the calf all day. She has a good bit of edema and she's been streaming colostrum all day long from all quarters except the Staph A quarter (see my other thread from last week).
When I took her in to milk tonight about 8:30 or 9:00, she was being especially difficult to get moving but also seemed obsessed with the calf so I chalked it up to that. But, while we were milking, I noticed her hunching and panting with her mouth open and tongue out. She seems a bit wide eyed too at the time. The Staph A quarter also started streaming colostrum and continued and a fairly good pace for the entire time the other 3 quarters were milked by machine and then hand stripped to try to get more out. The machine only got less than a half a gallon from the 3 good quarters. I probably got at least that much from the Staph A quarter alone.
Then she refused her grain after milking and it is obvious something is up. Her temp is 103.2 so she's got a bit of a fever although it was 95 and humid here today. We've also been dealing with the right front quarter with the Staph A issue. So maybe fever from that issue going on. She is not down and seems pretty stable on her feet. She can get down and back up though.
So what are my most likely differential dx's here? Do I need to call the vet? Honestly, I unless it is something simple like she has an upset stomach from eating the placenta, we would probably not choose heroic measures at this point just because of the chronic Staph A. Ugh! This sucks!
