Yep, I was just absolutely meant to have this girl, RdoubleD Get N Lucky. She gave me a lovely, sturdy heifer early this morning, and so I feel the need to tell the story about how I got so lucky to be able to buy her this past fall.
The very first thing that happened that makes me think I'm meant to have this cow, is something I just remembered about a month ago. simplynaturalfarm, do you remember several years ago (2011, I think, had to dig around to find it) Shelley posted that her cow Beauty had a dun Taco heifer born? Heather & I were both jealous & commenting that we would trade her one of our heifers for that dun Taco heifer. A couple days later, I got a phone call from Monica of RdoubleD. She said she saw what I had posted, and that she had a 2yo dun Taco heifer she would sell me. We talked about it a bit, and I told her it sounded like the heifer was bigger than what I wanted, so I passed, and put it out of mind.
Then, a few years ago, I was looking at Monica's website, and saw Lucky listed for sale. It didn't even occur to me at that point that this was the heifer that she had called & offered to sell to me. But Lucky is the only dun Taco daughter that Monica has produced. I fell in love with her, just looking at her on the website, and wanted desperately to buy her at that point. But because of things being the way they were right then, I simply couldn't add another cow. I kept going back to Monica's website & wishing, but ended up telling myself that I just couldn't right then, and that if I was meant to have Lucky, she'd still be available when I was ABLE to buy her, and that if somebody else bought her first, then it just wasn't meant to be.
This went on for the better part of a year, then one day, Lucky was no longer on the for sale page. Oh, but she was back on the herd page...Monica had decided to keep her. I was relieved, because at least I still knew where she was. Maybe someday yet!
Then this past fall, I heard that Monica was downsizing her herd. So, I decided to look what she had for sale. After all, I had been so good all year & not bought ANY cows, so I could keep my count down for winter. Well, guess who was listed for sale?! Third time's the charm, right? I didn't waste any time! DH approved, especially once he saw a photo of her...she's MAGNIFICENT!! Things worked out quickly & easily, and she...and friend Addy, and a heifer calf ...were in my barn by Thanksgiving.
Here she is in all her glory. 7yo, just calved & look at that gorgeous udder!
At 45" tall, she is taller than I ideally want my Dexters, yes. But it's worth it, to get the width, depth & length this girl has!! She's a tank! Yes, I am absolutely in love, and so, SO happy that she's in my herd finally.
And here's another photo of the new baby, for good measure. She feels like she got Lucky's thickness, such a stout girl! Can't wait to weigh & measure her when DH gets home this evening.
Now to name the little one....Providence or Destiny maybe?
