I have been thinking about getting another cow and have the opportunity to pick between several milking shorthorns!! (How lucky am I? ) I currently have a jersey who is due in may. She is great, but we have had several health problems and is a very difficulty keeper. She also HATES fosters... I will most likely keep her for a while as I really do like her, but it would be nice to have something a bit more hardy.
So the choices, i am not great at all the terminology so I need all of your help. This is the info i got from the owner. It is a dairy (They seem like great people)
#1 was born april 2009 due to calve in may. Here is what they send for milk records: @1year-11months in 284days 7710 lbs milk 4%butterfat 3.2%protien 2-11 291d 9450M 3.7%BF 3.1%P, 4-00 270d 10740M 4.0%BF 3.1%P, 5-01 235d 9210M 3.8%BF 3%P, 6-00 184d 8490M 3.5%BF 3%P(Record in Progress). (this is where I need the most help with interpretation) good disposition. White in color
#2 the daughter of the first. Born 2012 due in april. 1-11 301d 9750M 4.2%BF 3.4%P, 3-01 172d 7790M 3.7%BF 3.2%P(RIP). Good disposition but she does dance(lifts leg up a suction goes on,then lifts the other leg for the next teat)when the milkers are being put on. Right rear quarter slow to milk out. Roan
#3 born april 2013, due in may. milking records- 40:1-11 216d 6390M 3.6%BF 3%P(RIP). Good Dispostion. 3 quarters. She is a very pretty roan color.
First three are natives without outside influence like holstien in their close pedigree (according to my information)
#4 born march 2013 due in march. Henefer:1-11 250d 7470M 3.6%BF 3%P. Right rear quarter slow to milk out. Always 1st or 2nd set of cows in the barn. Was kicky when we first started to milk her but calmed down quickly(never mean). Non Native but father was Native. She is solid red
#5 born april 2013 due in may. 1-10 250d 8500M 3.4%BF 3.4%P. Non Native. Again, good disposition. mostly white with red ears.
owner thinks all 5 should mother well but i do not believe any have had fosters. These are a confirmed pregnant by vet check. I will be calling with more questions soon as we have only comunicated by email so far. Any help you guys can give me before I call would be great!!
Thanks!!
