My approximately four year-old Brown Swiss/Simmental cow calved on May 29th. The first heat we noticed was October 5, and the only sign was mucous and less milk in the bucket. There was no riding, no bellowing, no nervousness. We AI'd her that evening. On October 20th she had mucous again (which would be a short heat!) but my AI guy wasn't available. Then today there was mucous again, so he came this evening.
I was telling him that the times he's come later in the evening, it seems my cows don't catch. He used to come around 6:30 or 7:00 p.m., and now he usually cannot make it until 8:00 or a little after. But he told me that once cows are in standing heat, the eggs aren't released until 18 hours. I thought it was 12?
I also don't know when Candy is IN standing heat since she only has mucous. So when I see mucous, am I too late or way too early?
He said if in 21 days I see mucous again, he will try to come, say lunch time if I see it in the morning, and then he'll come early the next day again. Or if I see it in the early morning, he'll come early morning and evening. He also mentioned trying the CIDR, leaving it in 5-7 days, and then waiting for that heat to come, and maybe it would be stronger and other cows would ride her.
AI'ing sure adds up. We believe our other five cows all took (will do tests soon) and two of them we had to do twice. He only charges $35 to come to my farm (but I pay him more since he lives 25 minutes away) but when I have more expensive sexed semen, it gets expensive. Shipping alone raises the prices of the straws a lot.
My husband wonders if we'll ever be in the black. Nope!
