Hello
Let me just start by saying that I am so thrilled to have 2 pregnant girls!!!!!! We have two girls that came back + with Biopryn testing the middle of Aug.
Cow #1- Ruby- Is full blooded Jersey. We have had her since Jan. She tested open the end of Jan. She had been in the field with a yearling bull, but he was banded on June 2.
We don't know when he got his job done, but based on my calendar notes, I'm guessing the middle of April or the end of May. Is there a way to tell which of these 2 dates she took?
The only other bull around was ~5mo before we tested her, so I don't expect he could have done it.
Cow#2- Bluebelle- Mostly Jersey with some Tarentaise thrown in. We have had her about a month. We were told that she was supposed to be due on Aug 23, but she too was field bred, so they weren't *sure* of her due date. As of today there is no calf and calving does not look imminent. She looks like she swallowed a barrel and we can see the calf bumping around in there, but she is not quite ready yet. She is getting rather floppy in the back end, but her pins are not gone, bag filling slightly but not even close to strutting, not slab-sided.
She is 7yo. Any idea how many weeks/days before calving it is normal for a more mature cow's bag to fill?
With Bluebelle, we're just excited to get the new baby here and start milking her, timing isn't such a big deal.
I'll try to get a recent pic of Belle in the morning My only ones of her are from a month ago.

She actually looks less floppy in the back end this morning than yesterday, scratching head.
Oh and Belle ALWAYS holds her tail off to the side. Strange.
With Ruby though. We grafted a 2 week old calf onto her about a month and a half ago. I'd rather not dry her off before needed, b/c the calf is so young, but want to make sure that she has her 2 full months off before calving.
Here is a pic of Ruby from last week

I assume palpating is an option, although I have no idea what to feel for to determine how far along she is. Would someone, as inexperienced as I would be, even be able to distinguish between a cow who is almost 5mo bred and a cow who is a little over 3mo bred. I would assume, for Ruby, that it would be too early to bump the calf (I do not have any experience with this either)
Thanks
