We brought Tilly and her 3 month old calf home on Saturday and by Monday I was getting concerned that the calf was not using the right front teat. Tuesday I tried to milk but I did not manage too, i left a gate open and had to chase her all over the paddock.
Wednesday the quarter was firm but I managed to get 1200ml out. It strained well and I stuck it in the fridge in a glass jar. The cream line was good but milk seemed to have flecks in it and a suspended sediment in the bottom of the jar, I forgot to taste it as I milked.
Thursday I milked again and got 1000 mls from the quarter and this time I tasted it and to me it tasted it and it tasted salty, strained well with no obvious flakes and not stringy bits. The quarter was a lot softer although it still had a firm section toward the front of the quarter.
I organised the vet to come check her out today. Unfortunately I could not be here I had to work. DH was and his report was scant. Evidently the vet said that she had a teat spider and he "put some metal things up the teat" , according to DH the vet said that there was no sign of infection and that she did not have mastitis.
So help me understand how the quarter could be firm, and the milk taste salty and she not have mastitis. I feeling so unsure as I am such a raw beginner.
DH has locked the calf away for the night so I can milk in the morning, would you drink the milk from that quarter or would you keep the milk from that quarter separate from the rest of the quarters?
I have found some Vit E capsules that I will add to her feed tomorrow morning.
Opinions please
